Converting a PDF to JPG is the quickest export in the book, until resolution and file size get in the way. This hub collects 30 guides covering the PDF-to-JPG questions we see most often, all written for offline desktop conversion.
Which Route Fits Your File
Conversion quality is decided by the source file, not by the tool. Find your document in the first column and take the matching route.
| Your file | Best route | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Page you need on screen | Export JPG at around 150 dpi | One file per page, small files |
| Page destined for print | Export at 300 dpi or above | Sharper, considerably larger files |
| Logo, diagram or sharp edges | Export PNG instead of JPG | No compression artefacts |
| Scanned document | Export directly, no OCR needed | An image of the page as it stands |

1 Open your PDF in a desktop PDF editor
Open the file in a desktop PDF editor and check what the page contains. A scanned PDF exports fine as an image because each page is already a picture, so no OCR pass is needed unless you also want editable text afterwards.
2 Choose the export target: JPG
Choose Export or Save as image and select JPG. Switch to PNG when the page has hard edges or needs transparency: JPG compresses those areas and cannot store transparency at all, which makes it a poor fit for logos and diagrams.
3 Set the page range and the resolution
Select the pages you need, then set the resolution. Around 150 dpi suits screens and presentations; use 300 dpi or more for anything that will be printed. File size rises quickly with resolution, so match the setting to the destination.
4 Save each page as a separate image
Export to a folder you can find again, then open one image and zoom in to check sharpness. A page that comes out blank usually means the original page was empty rather than the export failing.
How We Test & Write These Guides
Independent, hands-on method — every guide is verified on real documents.
Tested on Real Files
Every walkthrough is run on the same four test documents: a single-column report, a multi-column newsletter, a bordered table and a scanned form.
Offline First
Each method works with a desktop editor, so nothing is uploaded to a server and no file-size limit applies.
Output Verified
We convert the file, then open the result and check page count, tables, lists and fonts before the guide is published.
Re-checked, Not Reposted
Guides are re-tested when the tools behind them change. The date on a page is the date of its last check, not the day it was written.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to install anything to follow these guides?
No paid software is required. A desktop PDF editor covers every step, and the free options named in the guides are already installed on most computers. All processing happens locally, with nothing uploaded.
Why does file size change so much between exports?
Image size grows roughly with the square of the resolution, so doubling the dpi can quadruple the file. JPG also compresses every time it is re-saved, which is why exporting once at the resolution you actually need is better than exporting large and shrinking later.
Which editor were these guides tested with?
The walkthroughs were verified with PDF Agile, a desktop editor that exports images locally. The resolution and page-range controls described here appear in most desktop editors under similar names.
Are these guides kept up to date?
Yes. Export dialogs and default quality settings move between software versions, so guides are re-checked when the tools change. The date on each page is the date of the last verification.
Can I use these methods on a Mac as well as Windows?
Yes. Both platforms are covered, and the output is identical because the export settings, not the operating system, decide the image quality.
